Samoa was discovered by Europeans in the 18th century, though it was believed to have been settled as early as 1000 B.C. In 1899, a treaty between Germany and the US divided Samoa into two parts. What is known today as American Samoa is the eastern group of islands. Samoa is located about halfway between Hawaii and New Zealand.
Though only 2.9% of people in American Samoa speak English, they share the same Executive Branch as the US, and are administered by the Office of Insular Affairs, US Department of the Interior.
